A Brief Review of the Early Life of Ḫattušili III

(KBo 6.29)

(Translation)

Ed. Götze, Albrecht, Ḫattušilis: Der Bericht Über seine Thronbesteigung nebst den Paralleltexten, Mitteilungen der Vorderasiatisch-Aegyptischen Gesellschaft (E.V) 1924, 3, Hethitische Texte in Umschrift, mit Übersetzung und Erläuterungen Heft 1, 1925.

Col. I

§1

Thusly My Sun, Ḫattušili (III), [Great King, King of] Ḫatti,
Son of Muršili (II), Great King, King [of Ḫatti],
Grandson of Šuppiluliuma (I), [Great King, King of] Ḫatti,
Seed of Ḫattušili (I), [Son(?) of the city Kuššar],
and the word of Pudu-Ḫepa, Great Queen, [Queen] of Ḫatti

§2

I [was] the youngest [child] to my father, Muršili. Šaušga of Šamuḫa requested me, a very young child, from my father. So my father gave me over to the goddess in servitude. When I began to experience the wellbeing of the goddess more and more, it went favorably for me on account of the goddess. Šaušga of Šamuḫa, my lady, gave a weapon to me, and she gave the recognition of my brother to me. I began to run with the goddess. What house was for me, I singled out Šaušga of Šamuḫa in my house. Pudu-Ḫepa was the servant of Šaušga of Lawazantiya and daughter of Mr. Pentib-šarri, the Priest of Šaušga. Concerning (the fact that) I did not take her for wifeship impetuously(?); I took her for myself at the word of the goddess. The goddess gave her to me by means of a dream.

§3

At that time when my father died, my brother Muwattalli sat himself down on the throne of his father. I administered lands before him. He made me Priest in the city Ḫakpiš for the Storm God of Nerik. He gave me the land Ḫakpiš, the land Ištaḫara, the land Taraḫna, the land Ḫattina, and [the land] Ḫanḫana. He made the city Kuruštama my border. I administered all these lands before him. My brother took up [the gods] of Ḫatti, the gods of Arinna, and the gods of cedar and he brought them to Tarḫuntašša. He made Tarḫuntašša the Great Place for himself. He arranged the gods there. When my brother died, because there [was] not yet a šaḫuiwiššuali son for my brother, for the sake of the dignity of my brother I took up Urḫi-Teššup, and I put him [on the throne of his father in Ḫatti.] [. . . . .]

Col. II

§4'

"You are Great King! I am a small king! Come! We will present our case to the Storm God, my lord, and to Šaušga of Šamuḫa, my lady! If your case is superior, then may they make you superior! But if my case is superior, then may they make me superior!

§5'

I held up my hand to Šaušga of Šamuḫa, my lady, and Šaušga of Šamuḫa, my lady, helped me. She :maruwai-ed above and below, she made heaven and earth tremble. Šaušga, [my lady], supported me. To whatever lands I wrote, "Support me!", they supported me. To whatever land I did not write, even all of them supported me.

§ 6'

When that (man) heard, he fled from the city Maraššantiya. He went into the city Šamuḫa. I subsequently went to him. When I arrived in the city Šuluppa, what lords and support(?) people were with him, they came into my prescence and said to me, "We will go kill him, and we will bring (his) head into your prescence." I did not permit it. They did not kill him. I myself went down to him in Šamuḫa. Šaušga of Šamuḫa, my lady, revealed her divine guidance there, too, and at what later time I arrived with him, the fortress came down a gipeššar-measure of . . . . Šaušga of Šamuḫa confined him like a fish in a net. She bound him, and she gave him over to me. I brought him down, but then, too, out of respect for the dignity of my brother, I took him, [but] I did [no evil to him.] [Šaušga of Šamuḫa], my lady, took [my] hand, [. . . . .] in the place [. . .]

[Col. breaks. Col. III is badly broken. Col. IV, as far as it is preserved, is uninscribed.]
